Mick Bates attends opening of new Hydrogen Centre in Wales

Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates today attended the opening of 'The Hydrogen Centre' in Baglan Energy Park, developed by the University of Glamorgan. The centre will host a range of hydrogen research, development and demonstration activities and aims to raise awareness of the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier, which could help overcome our dependence on imported energy.
Commenting Mick stated:
"It was a privilege to attend the opening of The Hydrogen Centre, which will play such an important role in securing our future energy supplies.
"It is great to see such investment in future technologies in Wales and I congratulate the hard work of Glamorgan University for leading the way, to put Wales at the forefront of hydrogen research and development.
"Road transport accounts for around 21% of the total carbon dioxide emissions in Wales. Hydrogen can be used in combustion engines and fuel cells and so offers immense potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from this sector.
"I am pleased that the Assembly Government has supported this venture. The challenge now is for the Welsh Assembly Government to convert this quality research and development into a low carbon, green economy for Wales."
